An orphan is defined by UNICEF as a kid under the age of 18 who has lost one or both parents due to any cause. Children who lose their parents in unexpected, traumatic events such as war are compelled to stay with a surviving family member or enter the foster care system, where they suffer horrible conditions such as starvation and sickness.
