Happy Janmashtami- The Social Organ

 Krishna Janmashtami is the birth day of Lord Krishna is being celebrated on 18th of August this year. Krishna, divine lord of Hindu was born on this day falls on the eight day known as Ashtami of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapad. And is celebrated across India. It is also known as Gokulashtami or Janmashtami. This auspicious day is celebrated by keeping fast through out the day, Perfoming dance forms of Krishna Leela and at the end of the day when Shri Krishna was born. They have sweets and food to break their fast through out the day. People sing Krishna Bhajans, Dance and wish everyone a Happy Krishna Janmashtami. 

The next day is known as Dahi Handi Day or Nandotsav. This day is celebrated by breaking earthen pot of yoghurt which are hung up high by a rope in between two buildings at a level of second or third floors. This work is done by a group of boys called 'Govindas'. They climb over one another in an organised manner to form a human pyramid to break the Dahi Handi. While forming the pyramid, there are large number of people cheering the Govindas.It’s a great celebration where cash prizes or trophies are offered to the Govinda who breaks the Dahi Handi. And after that people celebrates Janmashtami by eating yoghurt.


Now let's come to the history, Lord Krishna was the Eighth Avatar of Lord Vishnu. in the Dwapara Yuga, there used to be a wicked king of Mathura named kans. He had a sister called Devaki who is the mother of Krishna. Shri Krishna was born born to Devaki and Vasudeva. Kans already knew that their child will be his destroyer so he put them in lock up and killed all the childern, Devaki gave birth but unable to kill Shri Krishna. When he was born, Vasudeva smuggled across the Yamuna River to Gokula and raised by the leader of cowherds, Nanda and his wife Yashoda. later Kans and Krishna had a battle where Shri Krishna won the battle and ruled the state. 

Shri Krishna has also played a major role in the battle of Mahabharta where he guided Arjuna and gave him knowldege of Bhagavad Gita which is now the biggest Hindu texts. Many of the leaders and people used to read Bhagavad-Gita and they have a great opinion on it. At present Iskcon temple is one of the biggest temple in the world.Today, it is present in over 16 countries in the continent. Shri Krishna was a great son, lover and friend. He representated the friendship of rich and poor with his childhood friend Sudama. He had 16108 wives but despite of having 1000's of wives his heart always ached only for Radha.

3. Shri Krishna has 108 names among which the most famous ones are Gopal, Govind, Devakinandan, Mohan, Shyam, Ghanshyam, Girhdari, Baanke Bihari to name a few.
